Research Institutions
PART OF THE LEADING RESEARCH INSTITUTIONS OF THE UNIVERSITY

■ Research Academy of Remote Sensing and Earth Sciences

Founded in July of 2009, the academy aims to develop into a new type of remote sensing supported geoscience disciplinary construction platform that integrates earth sciences, mathematics and physics as its disciplinary basis and makes full use of its advantages in remote sensing information extraction, hyper-spectral remote sensing, microwave remote sensing application and 3S integration technology to conduct applied research mainly on wetland remote sensing, urban remote sensing, geological remote sensing and disaster remote sensing.

The academy has in it 3 institutes, namely Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Science Institute, Geographical Information Engineering Application Institute, Geography and Land Resources Institute. In addition, it has a Remote Sensing Satellite Ground Station and a Laboratory of Urban Wetland and Regional Changes.

■ Laboratory of Organosilicon Chemistry and Material Technology

The Laboratory of Organosilicon Chemistry and Material Technology started its R&D on organosilicon chemistry and material technology in 1991 and was granted the status of a Key Laboratory jointly constructed by China’s Ministry of Education and Zhejiang Provincial Government in 2005.

In the laboratory, there are a number of research institutes, each with research focus on a certain area such as Special Organosilicon Monomer and Functional Silane, Novel Organosilicon Compounds and Polymer, New Product Process, Silicone Molecules Design and Computational Chemistry, Universal and Modified Silicone Materials, Functional Organosilicon and Special Materials, Molecular Spectrum Application, etc. The laboratory also has an Analysis and Testing Center and an Information and Intelligence Center. With a floor space of over 6,000 sq.m. and over 200 sets of modern equipment, the laboratory has been conducting cross-disciplinary research at national and regional levels ranging from polymer materials, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, fine chemicals and engineering, instrument analysis, medical science, computer science, as well as management, business and marketing.

■ Institute of Aging Research

The Institute of Aging Research (IAR) is a professional scientific research institution established with the strong support of Hangzhou Municipal Government. The institute boasts a team of experienced experts and researchers headed by renowned scholars with international and national fame, and it is equipped with internationally most advanced facilities for medical research, including platforms of animal models, cell sorting, microimaging, molecular pathology, proteomics, molecular engineering and trace metal analysis systems.

The institute aims to conduct omnibearing, systematic and fundamental research on aging mechanism by combining basic investigation with clinical practice, integrating studies of major aging related disease conditions and those of key molecules and their interface and networks, and piecing together the defects at the levels of molecules, cells, tissues, organs and the individuals. IAR has 4 major research programs, namely Stem Cells and Tumor Cell Senescence, Immune Senescence and Diseases, Brain and Cardiovascular Aging and Metabolic and Endocrine Aging.

In 2011, the institute’s project of “Telomere Binding Proteins and Diseases” has been listed by China’s National Science Foundation as a “Major National Project of Scientific Research” and has therefore been granted exceptionally strong support from the Foundation.

■ Institute of Development and Regenerative Biology

Established in 2010, the Institute of Development and Regenerative Biology has been focusing its research on the biological mechanism of development and cell regeneration of animals, with the aim of gaining knowledge and exploring means of improving human health and treating human illnesses. The Institute has already set up a platform of Cell and Developmental Biology Research, and a Public Technology Platform of Transgenic/Genetic Knockout Mice and a Cell Genetics Lab of Animal Tissue and Organ Development, which will conduct research in areas of molecular biology, developmental biology, neurobiology, cell biology, genetics and epigenetics, are under rapid construction.

■ Zhejiang Provincial Research Base of Humanities and Social Science (Art Education)

With a century’s fine tradition of education, Hangzhou Normal University is bestowed with unique advantages in art education as well, boasting high-quality programs and research institutes such as “Music Education”a national program with distinction, “Fine Arts” a provincial key program and the Center for Artistic Studies of the Han-Dynasty Paintings a Provincial Key Research Base of Humanities and Social Sciences. As a result, the faculty of art education of the university was granted the status of the Provincial Key Research Base of Humanities and Social Sciences for Higher Education Institutions in 2008.

The Base has been undertaking a number of research projects at both national and provincial levels in its 3 institutes, namely Art Education, Art Theories and Art History.

■ Research Center of Biomedicine and Health

Founded in 2007, the Research Center of Biomedicine and Health of the University has been conducting, by means of green chemistry, projects in the areas of biomedicine, renewable energy and green environmental protection, including transforming green chemical technology and R & D of new drugs, particularly precious and rare Chinese natural herbs, degradable biomaterials, and various reagents, namely biological reagents, pharmaceutical reagents and diagnostic reagents for major diseases such as cancer and cardio-cerebrovascular disorders.

The Center consists of 8 labs, namely Genetic Engineering, molecular enzyme engineering, fermentation engineering, organic synthesis, pharmaceutical analysis, pharmaceutical preparations, small-molecule chemiluminescence catalystic reagents, and biomaterials.

■ University Science Park

The University has a Science Park located on its Cangqian new campus, which integrates education, research and production and serves as a supporting platform and service base for transferring the university’s research achievements, incubating high-tech enterprises, and training talents capable of innovation and entrepreneurship. Among the first group of research institutions that take home at the Park are the Research Academy of Remote Sensing and Earth Sciences, Laboratory of Organosilicon Chemistry and Material Technology, Research Center of Biomedicine and Health, and Institute of Sustainability.
